How to Buy a Humidor

If You Love Cigars, You Need a Humidor

Even if you’ve only recently started enjoying fine cigars, you should buy a quality humidor before your collection grows further. The cigar box that came with your cigars is fine for shipping, but it won’t keep them in prime condition over the long term. As you well know, some cigars need to be kept for 6 or 7 years before they reach their best smoking condition. If you don’t have a good humidor, that cigar will be ruined before you can smoke it.

Decide Which Type of Humidor You Need

The first step to buying a humidor is deciding where you’ll keep it and how big it should be. Do you want one for your home, office, country club, or for travel? If you have a small collection that you keep at the club, a 12-to-20-cigar humidor should be sufficient. Twelve is probably best for traveling. A home or office humidor can hold 100 or more cigars. If you want to display it on your desk, a 100-cigar humidor that enhances your décor is best. If you have 300 cigars, then a cabinet humidor might be a better place to store them. Cabinet humidors can be plain, designed to be kept in a closet, or large decorative boxes suitable for display.

Look for Quality Workmanship and Materials

With those decisions made, start shopping. The best humidors are made of wood dried to a 6% moisture content. The wood should be solid hardwood, not plywood. The surface should be smooth, no cracks or lumps. Travel humidors can be made out of metal to protect both the cigars and the case from damage. If possible, carry your travel humidor on the plane, but it should be safe in your suitcase as well.

The humidor’s lining should be Spanish cedar or Honduran mahogany. Spanish cedar is not the same as the cedar lining your closet. Closet cedar is much too strong for cigars.

A Good Humidor Maintains Ideal Conditions

The humidor should be large enough to hold your cigars comfortably and loosely. If you enjoy more than one kind of cigar, look for a humidor with dividers to keep the tastes from bleeding together. Check the closed lid to make sure the box seals firmly when full.

Most humidors come with a hygrometer and some kind of humidification device. The hygrometer will be either an analog dial or a digital read-out that displays the humidity level of the box. Both work equally well, so it’s just a matter of personal preference. Humidification devices come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and formats. You’ll frequently see tubes filled with distilled water or humidification fluid and plastic rectangles that contain humidification crystals. A larger humidor may have an electronic humidifier to accurately maintain the humidity between 70 and 72%.

Proper Humidor Maintenance Is Key

Once you receive the humidor and have the hygrometer and humidification device conditioned according to the instructions, you should let the box humidify for a few days before adding cigars. Keep the humidor away from sources of direct heat, air condition, direct sunlight, and drafts. All four will dry out the box and could damage the cigars inside. You should open the humidor every few days to let fresh air circulate into the box.

A humidor is the only way to store and maintain your cigars in their proper condition. Quality humidors don’t have to be expensive. You can find an attractive humidor at an affordable price and spend the rest of your money on amazing cigars and other necessary cigararette accessories.

If you are someone who enjoys cigars, then you definitely require a humidor. A humidor is an essential item that will allow you to maintain the quality of your cigars. The storage box used for shipping cigars is meant for shipment only and will not keep your cigars in their best condition for a long time. Many cigars should be  stored for as long as six years before they reach their optimal smoking condition. If you don’t have a humidor, your cigars will likely spoil before you smoke them and you will not be able to age them as recommended.  Your cigars will quickly become dry, acquire an acidic taste and will burn unevenly.

The first thing you should decide while buying a humidor is the capacity you require and where you will place it. Humidors with a capacity of twelve to twenty cigars are a good size for traveling as well for storage at your club. Humidors that hold up to 100 cigars should be fine for the home or office and can be placed on your desk or a shelf. If you have over three hundred cigars, then you should opt for a humidor cabinet to store them.

Once you have decided on the size of the humidor you are going to buy for your cigars, you should next focus on the materials and workmanship, making sure they are of good quality. The best  humidors are constructed in a way that allows maximum air circulation inside the humidor.  Travel-sized humidors are normally made from metal to protect not only the contents but the case as well from being ruined. The lining of the humidors should either be Honduran mahogany or Spanish cedar. Spanish cedar is a great option because it protects against tobacco worms and supports the cigar aging process.

A good humidor should be large enough to comfortably and loosely hold your cigars. If you have more than one type of cigar, you should choose a humidor with dividers so that the tastes don’t blend. Next you have to check that the box is well sealed when the lid is shut and that humidity does not escape from the box.

Almost every humidor includes a hygrometer and some type of humidification device. Maintaining the humidity of the cigars in very important. Dry cigars tend to become fragile and burn faster, and the cigar develops a bitter flavor. On the other hand, damp cigars burn slowly and unevenly and may have a heavy, acidic flavor.  The hygrometer may be either digital read-out or an analog dial that shows the humidity level inside the box. Both  methods function equally well.  As you can see many factors influence the purchase of a quality humidor, however it’s an important investment in order to preserve the quality of your cigars.

Tips For Buying A Cohiba Humidor

The Cohiba humidor is not widely manufactured; they only have a limited number of humidors in mind when they produce this wonderful humidor. An example of this would be the limited production Cohiba Cigars Humidor. They come as a collector’s item and there are only 250 of them produced worldwide.

This Cohiba humidor has a capacity of 50 – 70 cigars; it is handcrafted and features the Cuban Cohiba box label on its lid. The finish of this humidor is high gloss with a clear two part varnish, thus what we see is a super high gloss finish that just exudes sophistication. The finish is done with no less than fifteen layers of aircraft quality hard Polyurethane super-high gloss, and then its hand-polished to an extremely high sheen – truly sensational.

Using a Humidor for your Cigars

If you are one of those who has recently joined the cigar revolution may be unsure why you need one of the humidors at all. But although a few cigar lovers might think that keeping their cigars in a plastic bag along with a damp towel is good enough to keep them well, the majority would rather invest in a good humidor.

Cigars normally adapt to their surroundings absorbing scents and dampness from the environment just like a sponge would water. If they are stored in an inappropriate environment the cigars will turn out to be unsuitable for smoking, disappointing the manufacturer as well as the owner. However, if they are stored properly in a suitable environment like a humidor you can be sure that they will age appropriately to be enjoyed by even the most seasoned connoisseur.

For those who might not have heard of a humidor before, it is basically a box or container which maintains constant humidity and will serve as home for your cigars as they age gracefully over up to a period of six or seven years. Humidors are normally made from Spanish cedar. Some benefits of Spanish Cedar include its ability to retain more moisture,  naturally fending off tobacco beetles capable of destroying an entire cigar collection and as an extra perk the cigars inside the humidor develop a  special, alluring aroma.

Before you use a new humidor, you have to prepare it for use. Use a damp cloth to wipe the inside of the humidor.  Then place a bowl of water within the humidor and keep it there for about twelve hours with the lid closed, allowing the majority of the water to evaporate.  Place a second bowl of water inside the humidor, this time for 24 hours. When the water quantity no longer reduces or your humidor is no longer thirsty, your humidor is ready to be entrusted with storing your cigars.

You will also have to calibrate the hygrometer. Some retailers provide pre-calibrated hygrometers. In other cases you will have to follow the simple steps to make sure the hygrometer is prepared to properly read the humidity level inside the humidor.

Once you’ve prepared your humidor, you can place your cigars inside. You may wish to use dividers to minimize the mixture of aromas from different types of cigars. Other aficionados appreciate the flavor mixing. In any case you are sure to enjoy your cigars for a longer period of time and at a higher quality once you start using a humidor.
