The end of the year is approaching, and thus we have a lot of holidays to look forward to. It is at this time of year that we all remember the past and contemplate our present and future endeavors. Reminiscing about the times when we were younger, when things seemed much more exciting and endless, is important. We are reminded by our children (or young cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, etc) that life is a cycle. Even though time may seem to be speeding up for some of us, this is the best time of year to relax and be thankful for everything we have.

At the moment, I am enjoying a wonderful AVO No. 2 that is burning quite evenly. As it burns, I think about the cigars I have enjoyed over the years. How many of them changed my life? How many of them helped me through the tough times, or were there at the best times? Cigar smoking always calms me, but I remember the loved ones who have passed and how I cannot enjoy a stogie with them anymore. A cigar is like a symbol for relaxation–smoking almost requires you to stop and think. Light one up and most people assume they should let you be until you are done (unless of course they are joining in!).

I suppose what I am trying to get at here is that this AVO No. 2 made me think about all the cigars I have had in the past year. Which ones did I love? Which ones were great, but I forgot about them? Reminder, I am not a professional at describing cigars. All this “first third, second third, last third” business usually just confuses me. But what I am perfectly able to do is tell you whether or not I liked a certain stogie. In my opinion, all the flowery descriptive language may seem nice but when you get down to it, what is more important–an in-depth discussion of the process behind the cigar, or the overall experience?

First off, let’s talk about the Padilla 1932. It is quite a classic, medium-bodied cigar. This was a new one for me, but with incredibly smooth smoke and a great burn throughout, it turned into a first-pick a lot of times over the past 12 months.

I cannot make a list of favorite cigars without including the Rocky Patel Sun Grown. Every single one of these I smoked was an enlightening experience. A reliable, trustworthy cigar no doubt!

I was also quite fond of the Oliva Serie ‘O’. I only smoked a few of these this past year, but each time was euphoric. The ‘O’ had an even burn and a great draw–but it was also quite tasty! Definitely worth your time and money.

The Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 was smooth and mild, great for a light relaxing smoke on the back porch. It had hints of wonderful nutty flavors, which meant I had a quite a few bundles hiding out in my humidor throughout the year. These guys would be well-liked by most because of their versatile nature, which means they are perfect cigar gifts.

As always, good company, good food, good health, and amazing cigars are most important to me this time of year.
