Good Drink And Good Cigars: Arturo Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8

Cigar Aficionado’s review:  From Cigar Aficionado’s February 2001 review of Arturo Fuente Flor Fina 8-5-8 (rated a Best Buy):  An oily wrapper. It’s solid, with a good burn and draw. It’s light, floral and almost minty, with notes of ginger, cinnamon and coffee.

My review:

I first smoked an Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 cigar during my first Navy ship tour, in 2001.  Being on an aircraft carrier, I was the ship’s sales officer, which meant that I was in charge of three stores, serving over 5,000 people during our six-month deployment.  My right-hand man, who was in charge of ordering all of our supplies, had ordered a LOT of cigars, especially Arturo Fuente cigars.  My storeroom had cases of different brands of cigars (each case has up to 50 boxes).  It is not an exaggeration to say that I had over 10,000 cigars in my inventory.  After a while, it became apparent that we would have too many cigars upon the end of our deployment, so we had a sale

My supply clerk told me, “We need to mark these cigars down dramatically so that we can move them quickly.”  I told him, “Don’t worry about it.  I can mark down every cigar brand.”  I marked all of the cigar brands to a third of the price, and we moved a lot of those cigars very quickly.  In fact, quite a few of the Arturo Fuente cigars made it into my stateroom (at the same price that everyone else paid—no specials for me).

One of these cigar brands was the Flor Fina 8-5-8.  I had bought 3 boxes, since I had marked them down to ridiculous prices (about for a box, which normally went for , and can go for almost 0 today).  My roommates and I decided to have a cigar a few nights afterward, and they tasted really good.  I can’t describe what Fuente 8-5-8 tasted like for the first time, but I do know two things.  First, I had never smoked a Fuente cigar, but became a diehard Fuente fan that night.  Second, almost 10 years later, I still have a box of Arturo Fuente 8-5-8’s in my humidor (a different box, though).

Cigars

Cigars are a special reward at the end of a long day, in much the same way as a fine wine. Tobacco is influenced by weather, climate and soil, and the best cigars are hand-made, adding that variable to the whole mix. These inevitable variables make consistency more difficult to achieve. The best brands of cigars will owe some of their success to the process of maintaining a consistent level of flavor and quality. This is one of the reasons why you should select a well-made brand, so that your first experiences are positive ones.

The body of a Cigar refers to the actual taste, and the strength of that taste. A cigar that is light in body will be lesser in strength than one that is medium in body. In keeping with that comparison, a cigar that is referred to as full-bodied will be stronger than either of the other two. Many cigar smokers recommend that you start out with a cigar of light body, to become accustomed to the taste.

If you’re looking at the better made cigars, make sure that their construction is good. Keep in mind, that if a cigar is hand-made, it will not be as uniform as cigars that are not hand-made, and this is to be expected. When you select a cigar, hold it lightly in your hand and squeeze various areas so that you can be assured that there aren’t any softer spots. Soft areas mean non-uniform burning.

Try a few good brands of cigars if you are looking for the best smoke. If you’re not sure of a brand, buy individual cigars and not full boxes, in case the taste is not to your liking. Find a brand that you have enjoyed a few times before, and keep in mind that sometimes your taste may change a bit. You may have more than one favorite cigar, as you try more brands out. You can read about other people’s favorites at CigarBlogs.com

The cap of a cigar is a smaller tobacco piece that acts to close off one of the cigar ends. It makes each cigar look better, and it keeps the paper wound properly. This is the part that you will usually clip off before you begin smoking your cigar. It should be thought of as being a little like opening the cigar to smoke, rather than as cutting the end off. In fact, you shouldn’t clip off the whole cap, or the paper will begin to unravel. Just open up a small air hole.

To get the best flavor and burn, toast the foot of cigars by holding a flame far away so it doesn’t touch the foot. Swirl the flame by rotating the cigar, giving glowing embers to the foot. Once you have the embers glowing and smoke coming off, remove the flame source from the cigar, and blow out gently through your cigar. Puff a bit and reapply the flame so that the cigar can finish being lit. Then you are ready to enjoy the smooth and rich taste of your cigar.

Swedish Match North America Announces the Freshest Cigar in the World

Swedish Match North America Announces the Freshest Cigar in the World

Richmond, VA (Vocus) January 18, 2008

Swedish Match North America, a manufacturer of market leading brands of smokeless tobacco, cigars, and pipe tobacco, today announced the introduction of a new Foil Freshâ?¢ pouch packaging method for two of its popular mass market cigar brands, Game by Garcia y Vega and White Owl. The inventive packaging is a direct response to consumer requests for a fresher cigar.

Swedish Match North America is noted for creating pioneering packaging—first introducing the foil pouch more than 40 years ago for one of its loose leaf products. Innovations on the technique have resulted in foil packaging specifically designed for the cigar consumer. “This is a first for mass market cigars,” according to Brian Love, Director of Marketing, Cigars. “For the consumer, it means the cigar you are purchasing is as fresh as the day it was made.” Foil Freshâ?¢ pouches are available for single cigars or in a resealable pouches for 2 cigarillos.

Consumer research shows more and more cigar smokers are demanding freshness. 65% of consumers polled say freshness is the most important consideration, well ahead of taste and price. * Love says, “The level of freshness is the deal breaker and the moment of truth for a cigar smoker is squeezing the cigar and discovering its freshness.”

Proprietary Freshness Research conducted on both foil wrapped and cellophane wrapped cigars compared the moisture level threshold at which a cigar retains its freshness. “There was a significant reduction of moisture in the cellophane wrapped cigars when stored in adverse conditions within 2 weeks,” comments Love. “By week four they were dry. The new foil packaged products clearly passed the threshold well over 44 weeks with almost no moisture loss when compared to cellophane wrapped cigars.”

Foil Freshâ?¢ pouches are currently available on Game and White Owl cigarillo 2 packs. Foil Fresh â?¢ single stick packaging will be introduced on Game Palma and White Owl Peach and Grape blunts on March 17th of this year.

Habanos – The World of Cuban Cigars

“A Havana Cigar is to the art of smoking what a great wine is to the art of drinking” – Alan Senderens

Discovered by Christopher Columbus in his 1492 expeditions, the magnificent product Havana Cigar from the main land of Cuba has become the greatest gift of men in high place. The Cuban Habano is truly unmatched in its quality and experience. And, its tobaccos were recognized as superior to all others and this opinion has not changed in last many hundred years.

Cigar smoking has evolved as a true gourmet experience of Curiosity over the years in its existence and evolution. For Cigar aficionados the Havana is more than just a Cigar. It’s a world unto itself beholding certain standards and etiquettes and fascinated many famous men like Fidel Castro, Jack Nicholson and even legends like Sir. Winston Churchill along with many more.

The journey into the world of cigars, begin with the plantation & cultivation of the cigar crop, its harvesting, blending, manufacturing with endearing efforts by Cuban cigar specialists. Each cigar is distinct from others in terms of its body architecture, texture, colors, aroma and taste. The manufacturing of Cigars requires lot of care and specialisation. To start with, the wrapper leaves are aged and then the manufacturing of cigars proceed. The entire process can be segregated into 3 steps â?? Step 1 – Preparing the wrappers; Step 2 â?? Preparing the fillers; Step 3 â?? Composing the blend. Finally, three years or more since the oldest leaf was picked, it then becomes a Habano. Over time, the flavour changes depending on the different storage time, sometimes leading to develop a fine flavour.

The aroma of cigars comes to play even before lighting by detecting woody, fruity or spicy notes. So storing and preserving the aroma, the texture is very critical in case of cigars. The boxes in which they are stored are valuable and are called Humidors, that stores cigars under specific humidity and temperature as necessary for their durability.  To read more on the â??Manufacturing of Cigars’ and â??How to Store Cigars’, you may visit the Habanos section on Delhi Duty Free website.
