Simple Inventions – Great Invention Ideas Needed!

Someone needs to invent a simple machine to entertain house cats!    

I have two cats and they constantly pester me to play with them.  I would think in this day and age there would be some kind of electronic mechanical toy someone could invent that would keep the little beasts occupied for at least a couple of hours per day.

There are several approaches that I think hold promise.  Whatever the machine is, it probably needs to move quickly if it moves. It also should be relatively small, or at least parts of it should be.  Cats like small things that move quickly.

Perhaps a very tiny autonomous robot that would interact with the cats would work out well.  I don’t know how small hobby type robots are these days… maybe I’ll investigate that.  To provide interactivity one of these new micro-controllers would be idea.  They require very small amounts of current and need very little support circuitry. 

A couple of sensors and motors, and micro controller and some transistors or relays and you’re in business.

Another interesting approach to a simple machine for a cat toy would be some type of device that could launch small objects into the air, and then reel them back in via strings attached to the object.

By incorporating one of those microprocessors and an infrared detector you could have it launch an object whenever the cat got close enough to be detected.  As it tries to reel back the small object it could sense how much resistance there was and stop reeling when it met resistance, or reel faster, or you could even ad random actions triggered by sensors to keep the cats off balance.

The machine could also make noises and or move under its own power.  Your imagination is the only constraint.

Launchers could be made in a variety of ways, spring loaded, air powered, centrifugal force powered are possible ways.  One method I’m thinking about is using a small tube about ¼ to 3/8 inch in diameter and maybe 6 inches long, connected at one end to a small air chamber or tank through a valve.  A small aquarium type compressor could charge the tank and when the valve opens it would blow the small light object out of the tube. 

The object would be connected to a string which would be used to reel the object back in.  The string could thread through a small hole in the bottom end of the tube and attached to a reel powered by a small motor.  The reel could be rigged with a sensor to detect when the object was being pulled on by a feline.  In response it could have a number of responses pre-programmed into the microcontroller.  For instance, it could stop reeling in the object and simply wait until the object was not being pulled on by the cat, and then resume reeling.  It could also trigger the base unit to move in some way, or perhaps rotate, or even launch a second object.

The cat toy invention could also be programmed to play a variety of sounds in response to combinations of the sensor inputs.  Flashing lights are also a possibility. 

I may or may not get involved in a project to build a simple machine invention for the purpose of entertaining my cats depending on how much time I think I could spare for such a project. I probably should do it because if I could get myself a couple of hours a day without being pestered by the cats my productivity would undoubtedly improve substantially.

In the mean time if one of you closet inventors can come up with such an invention I would be happy to buy one for my cats!

All About the Bocaccio Rockfish

Bocaccio is one of the largest of about seventy species of rockfish that inhabit the Pacific coast from the Gulf of Alaska to Mexico. It is abundant off the central and southern coast of California.

It has a fairly large mouth. The upper jaw is long and extends beyond the eyes; the lower jaw is considerably behind the upper jaw. The forward dorsal fin is notched and has sharp spines. The body color ranges from olive to burnt orange or brown on the back and from pink to red along the belly.

As with all rockfish, the eggs hatch in the female, and she gives birth to live young. Bocaccio mate in early fall; the young are released several months later. Depending on her size, each female produces from 20,000 to 2.3 million eggs. The fry move toward the surface of the water and remain there for several months. Later they settle as a group anywhere from nearshore areas to depths of 95 to 395 feet. They grow rapidly and can reach 9 inches in length by the time they are a year old. They feed on plankton at first, then on crustaceans. When large enough they feed on smaller rockfish. Bocaccio can live 30 years or more, weigh as much as 24 pounds, and reach 36 inches in length, although most range from 20 to 24 inches in length.

Adults prefer bottom to midlevel waters over gravel-littered rocky formations and kelp beds from 250 to 725 feet deep.

Bocaccio numbers have been severely depleted because of heavy fishing pressure over the past twenty years or so. Releasing any bocaccio you catch will help increase the stocks.

General rules of putting in a patch

Until recently we couldn’t imagine putting on jeans with a patch anywhere except for some hard dirty work. Today the situation has changed: worn and torn customized jeans are fashionable. Special research to find new methods of creating different stages of worn effect is being made. However, sometimes it is necessary to put a patch on jeans from practical considerations – to mend and repair them. Here are some tips on how to put in a patch in a right way.

The classical method of putting in a patch can be carried out by hand or using a sewing machine. The materials you’ll need are quite simple – thread of the same color as the fabric you want to repair. If you want the patch to be practically invisible you should use the thread of the weft or chain for it will better merge with the cloth you are going to mend.

Stockage of the worn fabric is made from the outside with a thin thread from the same fabric by lifting with small stitches the threads of the weft and with longer stitches – the threads of the chain.

Mending of cuts or holes on customized denim is carried out by adding the threads to the fabric being repaired in staggered order. If needed the thread is folded in two. It is important that the fabric you want to repair is well stretched, you can use small embroidery hoop to achieve this.

Putting in a patch is carried out from the outside of fabric. To fix it first of all pin it to denim with preens and then tack it on the contour. After you’ve done this fix it with thin thread and small stitches in chain and weft direction. It is important to treat the seamy side of the cloth in order to hide the added part in a better way.

However, last fashion tendencies use patches on your custom jeans as a means of creating individual personalized style. Thus additional attention is given to damaged jeans parts decorated with patches. That is why mending, stitching and fixing of patches is deliberately done with the use of colored contrast thread in order to make patches more obvious.

The patches themselves can be made of bright contrast fabric as well. Denim of a different color, flower-dotted fabric, chequered cloth, lace and leather can be used for patches on jeans.

If you aspire to create your individual style by building original jeans just let your imagination fly and accentuate the torn and cut parts of your jeans. Sometimes it is good just to scrabble in a button box, find old imitation jewelry, beads or bright threads. Natural or deliberately made holes fixed with a safety-pin decorated with bright beads or cuts embellished with chains, small bells or metallic decorative elements can become an unusual highlight which will never leave your jeans unnoticed.

Here is an idea of jeans embellishment with shaped patches. Take your old torn jeans, pieces of any fabric you like, corresponding thread, a needle, sartorial chalk and scissors. Use sharp cuticle scissors to unseam the side stitches of your jeans near the place you want to put in a patch. This procedure will make it possible for you to work using a sewing machine.

After you’ve thought over your patch composition draw it on the trouser leg of your made to measure jeans using a sartorial chalk. Go back a centimeter from the main pattern lines and mark out the stitching allowances. Make small vertical cuts on the stitching allowances.

Turn over the stitching allowances inside and sew them. Choose a piece of contrast cloth for the patches. Put it into the trouser leg so that it closes the cuts and fix it with pins in order to have an impression of how your ready-made patches would look like.

Tack and stitch a piece of contrast cloth to denim. Stitch the edges of the front part of the patches using a back-and-fore stitch and contrast thread. If you make it by hand, use embroidery floss.

Another composition of patches can be situated in the bottom of the second trouser leg. Finish all the patch edges and stitch the unseamed places. That’s it!
